Description: glimpses of urban life via a map of the Parisian Metro (Flash)
Comments: A map of the Metro route "forms a broad but limited area with outstreched feelers" providing "insight into a Parisian city-neurotic." The map is a tree with countless connections and becomes the author's "own operation-field of his playing obsession." With that said, explore some stops on the Parisian Metro, each with its own unique visual/textual narrative. Superb...

    Description: photography by drew goren
Comments: I'm not sure who Willi Zucker is, a house painter perhaps, but the updates tell me he's not doing too well these days.  There's also a picture of him in the Visitors' Gallery thanks to Drew's participation, which I really appreciate.  How wonderful it would be to get another shot, sometime soon, with Willi up and at 'em again.  Drew Goren's portfolio selects has some of best portrait and documentary photography I've seen.  The subwaysleeper seems to thrive on capturing musicians in their best light and the tear-sheets tell me he's a professional (as virtually all the photos do).  But the site is free of promotional copy, simply presenting the best of Drew's art.  Great works don't need to be hyped.  I've got a strong feeling Drew's obsession with photography goes much deeper than making a living.  Just a hunch...

Description: pixel art plus tutorials and downloadable goodies
Comments: I know.  It's a strange affliction, this thing I have for pixels.  It's getting out of hand this month but pixel art is downright cool and I've just got to do my thing.  On October 1st, I told you about the "amazing realism" of the pixelized apartment at fuz.dk. My pick on October 4th had "pixel" in its name, though it was the photography that grabbed me.  On October 11th, there were Nevr's cool pixelated models of houses to play with.  Pixels, pixels, pixels!  Today's pick seems to fit perfectly into my October obsession with all things pixel.  The "Pixel Art" section has 10 different tasty pieces.  The detail of the building and people in "Garden Party" is astounding and Nicolas a/k/a Nasc Impact also has an apartment artwork that rocks.  There's an animated piece done at the "request of certain members of neokulture" that I liked, too, but I better warn you that it's on the graphic side – gee, those tiny pixelized pools of blood sure look real.  The site's all in French but Google's language tools did a pretty good job translating, so I also explored Nasc's tutorials.  There's also some wallpapers, brushes, and WinAmp skins for download, and a "Flash" section with several samples of games he's been working on.  Excellent site design with pixels galore – definitely a cool site.  I'll try to keep the rest of October pixel-free but I ain't makin' no promises...

Description: An exhibition of new art by Tavish... Reality is overrated.
Comments: This doesn't happen often – today's pick has the same site name as a previous pick – two great websites sharing the same single-word handle is where the similarity ends, though – each is unique in its own right.  Today's pick is a gallery of 6 pieces of "new art" from Tavish, a Canadian artist in Montreal.  The almost-real subject of each artwork seems to represent an emotional state or human condition (to me, anyway) and I think Tavish does a good job in conveying expression and mood through the artificial characters.  Ask Tavish what it's about – "perception, alienation, fashion, sex, culture, convergence, obsession, distortion, dichotomies, and (of course) the liminal."  Each piece is presented in Flash with an interesting twist of interactivity – following the link to each "source artwork" is something I'd recommend.  Can artist and designer be one in the same?  You tell me...

Description: digital obsession – photo gallery, guest gallery, wallpaper and news
Comments: Love those dark shades of gray, Vengas!  Today's pick is another visitor of coolstop who recently submitted a few images for the growing Visitors' Gallery (1 | 2).  Vengas says he has a "digital obsession" and it's obvious he does.  His personal gallery of digital photos has 12 different categories, each one with plenty of cool shots.  He takes both color and b/w photos and I think he's really good at it – his pictures speak for themselves.  Then there's the "guest gallery" with 5 different "rooms" of photos, 3 guest photographers per room – it's a unique presentation with neat pixel art and framed thumbnails on the gallery walls.  Very cool!  There's a few more empty rooms waiting for more guests to participate.  Need wallpaper?  There's some here you can download.  I just love sites like this and Vengas' is one of the better ones I've come across lately...

    Description: photos by Daniela Börner
Comments: What a glorious day it is!  Not only have I managed to add yet another great site with "pixel" in it's name (an obvious obsession with me), but I've also added yet another great photography site at the same time!  You don't really have to speak German to enjoy the site 'cause if you can't read the words, you still get the key content – the photography of Daniela Börner.  People, architecture, landscapes, and still life photos, nicely organized and presented – and the "special" section, unlike the others, has several Flash presentations.  I really liked the series of "trains" related photos and it's neat horizontally scrolling interface.  The color scheme of the site is different – strikes me as shades of "peach" – nice use of frames and perfect navigation, too.  Add the cool "photo of the month" feature where the user can vote on other peoples' submitted photos to the things I like about today's pick.  Pixels and photos, designer and photographer, all in one – nice site, Daniela!  [HSE7EN3 aka h73]

Description: "it's my obsession, my inspiration, my haven, my playground and, sometimes, the biggest pain in my ass."
Comments: I realize this could be a letdown for someone who just returned empty-handed from the big event.  But, then again, those with great inner strength and vision seldom let themselves feel let down.  "i'll still be the same girl i am now. people might look at me differently, as a winner or loser or a former nominee-- as a web designer or a web producer or a future employee-- but i will still be the same girl. "  The point is, today's winner is a truly great personal site and when all that hype's died down and its producer settles down again in her own space, it will still be a truly great personal site.  It'll still be the same honest and fresh writing style and the same sensitive, creative person behind it all that shines through and makes the user feel lucky to have encountered it.  As far as awards go...they don't really mean that much in the end.  Having experienced your personality and having been engaged briefly in what it means to be you are the things that'll bring us all back for more...thanks, christine...and I loved the "behold" thing.
