  • Fellow Designers 1/28/00
Description: a portfolio - pure and simple
Comments: After going through almost fifty sites last night, I was sure glad to find today's winner.  No hype, no sales pitch, no bookstore links - no nothing but a simple portfolio of cool, creative pieces from two designers in Stockholm with a single dropdown menu interface.  Very simple - very nice!

  • Metafilter 1/23/00
Description: a weblog that anyone can contribute a link or a comment to
Comments: At first, the large fonts seemed awkward to me - then it dawned on me that when you have a lot to read, the big type is kinda nice!  Today's winner is the best collaborative weblog I've come across.  Anyone can post or comment and there's hours and hours of quality surfing for the user here.  Searchable and easy to get around...a great resource for avid websurfers!  Oh - and if the font size still seems too large, you can even customize it to suit your taste...

  • sijmen hendriks photography 1/18/00
Description: gallery of dutch freelance photographer includes work from nepal, india, morocco, jordan, ireland and the netherlands
Comments: For the second time this week, the Best of the Cool winning site comes from a Dutch freelance photographer - an interesting coincidence, indeed.  Today's winner features mostly black and white photography from a number of places - I like the presentation which uses layers - fast loading pages and easy navigation.  One of the sections of the gallery contains portraits and other photographs all related to philosophers from around the world - pretty cool...

  • photo.nl 1/16/00
Description: the photographs of Rob Huibers
Comments: Rob Huibers is a freelance photographer working in northwestern Europe whose work is seen in various Dutch newspapers and magazines.  His site offers several galleries of photographs, including portraits, landscapes, and topical features.  Wallpapers, resources, and a "Photo of the Month" round out the content - an interesting and easy-to-navigate site.

  • dangergraphics 1/13/00
Description: design and illustration portfolio of a college instructor who teaches animation and multimedia product creation
Comments: Although today's winning site has room for improvement in content (don't we all?), I am really impressed with the slick interface, color scheme, layout, and original illustrations on display.  I also admire the fact that the producer is thorough in giving proper credit to copyright holders for the images which were based on others' original artwork.  All in all, this unique site is one to watch and worth checking out!

  • sountain 1/12/00
Description: "all matter is speed and flame"
Comments: You'll need Flash to view the main attractions, which deliver tasty sight, sound and motion.  There's a most unique flavor and style here, and you won't need Flash to enjoy the extensive list of inspirational sites - but, be forewarned - you might not surface for an hour or two...

  • Laudator 1/11/00
Description: Computer illustrator based in Paris, France. Illustration, photomontage, photo collage, digital image and graphic creation.
Comments: Originally posted to the Links Arena back in November, today's winning site showcases the colorful works of a digital artist in Paris.  I really liked the feature that allows you to change background colors as you're viewing the pieces.  There are four different galleries plus an excellent list of links to other artists on the web.

  • rion.nu 1/5/00
Description: "a display space for portfolio pieces, essays, photographs, links, resources, and collections to satsify an individual's lust to publish"
Comments: I feel like I found a hidden treasure today.  A web and print designer named Rion likes to tell stories - her craft is "emotive information design" and images play a key role.  Anyway, I come across a section called "essays" and though the window title says "under construction", what I find there is a piece called "Edges" that really knocked me over - do not miss it!  And while you're there, you'll also find some great b&w photography and artsy surroundings - damn - I love this job!

  • Donald Roller Wilson 1/1/00
Description: "Alive with spirit, they peer out from the surreal landscapes of their canvases with eyes which bare their simian, canine, and feline souls, and invite us to share in their reverie... or their revelry, as the case often warrants."
Comments: If you're interested in buying any of this artist's works, you better have some really big wads of disposable cash layin' around (like the stars who collect them).  But even if you're broke, you can go enjoy some of the most unique paintings exhibited on the web - the non-human subjects are more human than humans themselves!
