  • Artistica 12/31/99
Description: It seeks at exposing those who create in this new medium.
Comments: Sites like this play a major role in promoting the true spirit of the new medium by exposing the creative works of a number of talented artists and designers - outstanding site design and navigation.  Visual art is showcased with interviews, along with cool experimental stuff, comics, fonts and great inspirational links.

  • less rain 12/28/99
Description: multitudinous, multinational multi-complex multimedia collective
Comments: This site is a real study in navigation, giving you several choices in how to view it.  I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what it was about (which was quite enjoyable), but after choosing the Shockwave navigation scheme, it all fell into place.  The key pad in the reception area is impressive and the diversions in the lounge are entertaining - and I just love the navigation fish.  This one's fun - go play!

  • Australian INfront 12/27/99
Description: Links to edgey Australian design and art, plus collaborative visual art projects.
Comments: I'm familiar with one of the talented crew behind today's winning site - he says it's almost ready to launch and I say "coulda fooled me!"  For and about Australian design, it provides links to individuals, companies and resources - but the icing on the cake includes some cool desktops for download, an interesting "visual dialogue", and a "visual response" project with some outstanding stuff - do check this site out!

  • drububu design 12/22/99
Description: very original site with cool javascripts and java applets
Comments: A desktop-like interface with well-detailed grayscale icons lends a unique flavor to this site.  Features include a number of impressive JavaScript and Java diversions, downloads, drawings, and writing about art and design.

  • Interactive Design Forum 12/15/99
Description: Ideas, resources and commentary about interactive multimedia, digital design, web design and new media.
Comments: A design mag/forum aimed at educators and students.  I get the impression that the producer, who has been involved in graphic design and education for a long time, just discovered the web as a means to communicate, giving the site a unique flavor and perspective (in my eyes, anyway) - this interesting new project has potential if enough people submit their ideas.

  • FameWhore 12/14/99
Description: gallery of cool Flash diversions
Comments: Definitely for mature audiences only, today's award-winner is one of the best collections of Flash pieces on the web and probably the most unique.  The site's flavorful style has achieved global fame, as implied by the name.

  • Mappa.Mundi Magazine 12/12/99
Description: revealing invisible worlds (of information, data and communication)
Comments: I've known about this magazine for quite a while and got back to it recently after being pointed to its "Visions" feature.  Mapping "invisible worlds" of information is the theme and the articles are relevant and thought-provoking - things like the importance of maps reflecting reality (oops, bombed the wrong building!), data mining, and mapping the Internet, for starters.  Excellent design.

  • opensewer*com 12/10/99
Description: A website devoted to promoting art, stopping urban sprawl, keeping technology in its place, and providing a starting point for discussion of all these topics.
Comments: They tell you they're an entity - not just a website, calling themselves a community of active minds.  All true!  Periodic offline meetings, a gallery of works from a number of artists and discussion of truly important issues are all parts of this well-designed and interesting webspace.

  • Blot Illustration 12/8/99
Description: the portfolio of professional illustrator and designer Shane Rebenschied
Comments: Another great gallery of work - this time from an illustrator named Shane Rebenschied who provides his services to magazines and book publishers - some really intriguing stuff!  He's also done web design and programming for several well known sites.

  • Images 12/4/99
Description: a journal of film and popular culture - for people who just don't passively watch movies
Comments: If you really like movies and the cultural/historical "big picture" (no pun intended), you'll really like this site.  Excellent feature articles and reviews.

  • Internet Brothers 12/3/99
Description: Helpware for the Cybercommunity - "we're the Internet Brothers; balding, round-bellied Net junkies who wonder why sour cream has an expiration date."
Comments: You sense a certain web spirit going on at this content-rich site. In addition to being "helpware" for web builders, there's photography, site awards, an interesting navigation system and tons of personality.

  • SSS_DESIGN WEBSITE 12/2/99
Description: designs and photographs from Japanese designer Shinji Hagiuda - also showcasing other cool creators.
Comments: Tons of cool photographs and designs on display from this site's producer along with collaborations in process and a "museum" of Japanese artists.  Plenty of excellent content - worth several visits...
