  • diffraction 5/30/05
Description: immersed in the electromagnetic waves - images and words
Comments: "No one taught me the dangers of trying to find happiness on tree tops." The black & white that accompanies the thought intrigued me. Another such combination of words and image – "love is a knife through the jugular vein, son." I like Paulo's dark backgrounds, artsy photographs, and deep thoughts. Though some of the site is in English, some words and many visitor's comments are in Portuguese – I found it well worth using a translator. Then again, you could always just enjoy the pretty pictures...;~))  [portscan.ca]

  • jan postma photo 5/29/05
    Description: photo galleries
Comments: From Amsterdam, 5 simple galleries of small photos. Many are people pics, probably Jan's friends – some outstanding portraits among them, especially the black & white shots. There's also some street photos and cityscapes. All-in-all, an enjoyable browse...  [Newstoday®]

  • Senseless Acts of Beauty 5/28/05
Description: gallery of "good graffiti" from around the world
Comments: There's almost 500 photos of "good graffiti" in the database, San Francisco and Budapest being the most represented cities. If you care to discuss what "good graffiti" means, there's a forum too. I like the fact that the images are also viewable in normal size (and can be sent as virtual postcards). Most of all, I like the fact that it's good graffiti...;~))  [del.icio.us]

  • openlate.org 5/27/05
Description: It's blue. And really awesome.
Comments: "If you want to laugh, you have come to the wrong site..." I don't know about that. "Beth... my hat... my hat is just a whore. Going around, sitting on people's heads like that, it's not right!" That's in one of the everyday personal photo series. In another series, I learn to say no if invited to one of these guy's Super Bowl parties. There's 8 or 9 other series in that section, but since I can only laugh so much at one sitting, I escape to Josh's band pics and portraits (some great stuff) and think for a moment that this high schooler isn't all fun and games. But then I found the gravy and realized he is. Fun can be awesome, thank you...;~))  [your normal day < zeroin]

  • Story So Far 5/26/05
Description: an organic evolving storybook featuring quality narrative and illustration
Comments: "Ever fancied yourself as a short story writer and/or illustrator?" Then you may want to be "part of something special" by contributing to the "evolving storybook." I like the alternative stories feature – "the way the story unfolds is down to you..." And though I didn't see the previous version, I'd say the new look/design is definitely not lame – nor is the story so far...;~))  [Linkage]

  • a kiwi in amsterdam 5/25/05
Description: the bloggings of Tikitu de Jager
Comments: "It's here, it's a blog, it's new. I'm so overwhelmed with the technology, I can't get myself together and write anything." Up until a few month's ago, Tikitu's web presence consisted of a homepage at the University of Amsterdam, where he's studying some rather advanced programming. If I'm not mistaken, he's finished his Masters thesis and is now working towards his PhD. I'm guessing 'cause all of the posts on that old homepage are undated. So he started his real blog at the beginning of April. As you'd expect, there's some really techy entries related to Tikitu's work in LaTeX and java programming, but that's just a small part of it. He's into music and art and writes about his travels and has a humorous side too. "Last night as I was going home the buskers at Centraal Station were playing 'La Cucaracha' (somewhat badly). This morning they were still playing 'La Cucaracha' (equally badly). I wonder if they eat and sleep in shifts?" It's a blog, it's new...;~))

  • Ninth Art 5/24/05
Description: repository of ideas, analysis and contemporary thought, exploring every aspect of the arts and industry of comics
Comments: Today's pick "welcomes discerning readers" interested in "the arts and industry of comics." If that's your thing, you'll enjoy its wealth of articles "written to a high standard." Though not a big comics aficionado myself, I found several essays and interviews quite interesting. There's also an abbreviated mobile version featuring newer content. Describing itself as more a journal than a newsmagazine, the site is updated weekly with new articles from its long list of contributors – nicely done...  [del.icio.us]

  • Spacebats 5/23/05
Description: from the minds of mentalists
Comments: Let's start the week off right. Random nonsense. Like a "word of the moment." Kumquat – I've been spelling it wrong all these years. And pictures. Some of the goofiest pictures you'll ever see. And enough other nonsense, drivel, crap and baloney to keep your hungry mind busy for hours, or at least for a few choice moments. A little irreverent and totally useless but all the randomness is fun. Though you may wanna avoid clicking the monkey...;~))  [Fishbucket]

  • visualresistance.org 5/22/05
Description: political art and innovative projects aimed at raising awareness of urgent social issues through visual media
Comments: "We made a little connection. It was cool." A guy named Zack, who had taken photos of some stencils, talked to the people at the scene, apparently getting ready to remove the pieces. Found via del.icio.us, the photoblog is just part of the collective's site. They're "a crew of artists and independent media activists" who were behind a poster project, which emerged during last year's US elections. They point out it's "illegal to spraypaint, wheatpaste, stickers, or otherwise create artwork on public or private properties without permission" and that "any vandalism depicted or described is presented for docmentational purposes only." Another street art campaign is currently underway, also facilitated by the collective. "We aim to explore the spaces where art and activism interact and help develop a visual language for political action." Though some may say providing downloadable posters and how-to's are, in effect, forms of promoting vandalism, I've got a feeling it's more about promoting raised awareness of important issues of the day. Afterall, people are intelligent enough to choose, on their own, what actions they deem appropriate in response to things going down around them (in my opinion anyway). To borrow a phrase from an old Neville Brothers tune – "you can't stop running water..."

  • Kenan Aktülün 5/21/05
Description: black & white, color, and Polaroid photographs (Flash)
Comments: If you like artsy black & white photography, Kenan's shots from Paris, New York, and Mexico will please. The Triboro Bridge. La Rojena in Mexico. Curve. L'lle St. Louis. Sweet! Say you like color? Just check out the Instanbul section – but do leave time for the Polaroids...;~))

  • depthCORE.com 5/20/05
Description: international digital art and design
Comments: There's over 80 artists in its member circle, most of whom were invited to join, "united by their love for art, and their passion for innovation." New art packs, or collections of art based around themes, are release every 25-50 days. Two new packs were released just a few days ago – tons of digital art and photography and a little music too. Online since 2002, today's pick "was established to provide a showcase for the best in abstract craftsmanship, with the primary goals of breaking conventions, pushing boundaries and creating the finest digital modern artworks." Digital to the core...  [reminded by Phirebrush]

  • Eyes of Laura 5/19/05
Description: surveillance web cam and street culture blog
Comments: "My name is Laura. I'm tall with reddish blonde hair. I lived in Vancouver for ten years working as a security guard. I'm waiting for something to happen in my life." That was on day one last September. Last Wednesday may have been the last day. "These are my last words to this site..." Laura's boss said she'd been "fooling around" too much and that he'd found her blog. She was fired. Also on that day, she encountered something personally troubling on the front page of the newspaper. "I guess it's goodby...," which might explain why I was unable to launch the live surveillance camera this morning. The blog, or should I say journal, is full of interesting posts, some including voice messages from Laura and cam footage. And though I'm bumping into the site after it may have run its course, it's so cool I just have to share it with you, as a voice in the back of head whispers hopefully. "Maybe it's not over..."  [French'N'Fresh < Uailab]

  • wombat tale 5/18/05
Description: The interactive story of four wombats who dig their way to 1950s Russia in search of tomatoes. The user plays the part of a Russian tomato farmer, whose farm becomes a haven for the wombats.
Comments: The tale takes place in Russia in the 1950s. You've got to help the farmer's son harvest enough tomatoes to prevent them from losing their family farm. After you gather a few, you've got drop them into the tomato squasher that's attached to the silo (I'll never admit how long it took me to find it). The problem is, there's these 4 wombats who dug their way from Australia seeking those tomatoes and they seem to be emptying the darn silo as fast as you fill it up. Though it was fun trying to help the farmer out, I've got a feelin' he ends up losing the farm anyway. Oh well. A most engaging (and artfully done) interactive Flash thing...;~))  (thanks Enrico!)

  • bestbefore 5/17/05
Description: illustration, motion, and sound (Flash)
Comments: From Greece, illustration and animation that doesn't necessarily make sense. "Sometimes the results are more inspired." There's a big gallery of stills, mostly black & white line drawings and some of it downright bizarre – cool creativity at work. "Not much U can do." The animated new stuff and other works found in the "museam" are fun – and whatever you choose to browse, don't forget to "turn your audio on!"  [zeroin]

  • portscan.ca 5/16/05
Description: urban, industrial and automotive photography
Comments: "Unlike real photographers, I spend more time in post than in setting up the shot," says Wei, who uses the RAW format and usually applies some "colour correction, burning, dodging [and/or] toning" to his shots. Impressive work. I particularly like the streetscape and urban decay photos. And if you like cars, there's some goodies just for you too...;~))

  • oh existention 5/15/05
Description: "i take photographs when i leave my house"
Comments: Like another recent pick (3/18/05), today's uses simple click-through navigation, which seems to work well when each photo in a series is as good as the last one was. In the case of today's pick, all 14 series fit that description, in my opinion anyway. So forget you have a [back] button and take your time and enjoy – oh my...;~))  [successless (Dylan)@del.icio.us]

  • Contemplicity 5/14/05
Description: a bunch of writers that band together to write poems and the like for a collective exhibition at regular intervals, and to have a whole packet of fun
Comments: The "sixth Contemplicitic adventure and its wordly collisions" is now online – Confluence. It's a community of written word enthusiasts "who gather to grow, learn, and have them some fun; generally all with the end result of a new collection of poetry and prose for all to read appearing every month or two." There's hundreds of townfolk interacting in the Fora and if you wanna join in, you'll even get your own "relatively pretty looking" member page. Happy reading...;~))  [Phirebrush]

  • hello all! 5/13/05
Description: "a record of the past four years of my life, as i journeyed from bethlehem, ny to brooklyn, ny and began to establish a life for myself"
Comments: "i am full of news. just not today." If I'm not mistaken, the site launched just a few days ago. Bianca presents a record of her life over the last 4 years in the form of just 49 photos. "hello all!" She says she began to "establish a life" for herself during that period. I'm thinking she's talking about the art – what she's seen out various windows, on the street, and in people, and the way she's captured it in photos – it's all quite beautiful and revealing...;~))  [Newstoday®]

  • BrainJar.com 5/12/05
    Description: experiments in web programming
Comments: A little something for your brain today – "technical articles, tutorials and examples of programming for the web." Mike Hall calls it a learning resource rather than a cut and paste type of thing and in my opinion, he's done a pretty good job at it. Besides useful tutorials and samples in 6 different categories, there's some excellent external resources listed in each area. And the javascript blackjack game (using CSS playing cards) is a hoot...;~))  [RES72]

  • Kéa, etc. 5/11/05
Description: a family album, a public diary, a photoblog, a playground, an almost daily prayer...
Comments: "Day after day, here are some pieces of my unachieved puzzle." There's 10 photos in today's episode and the second shot certainly demonstrates Kéa's passion for poisson ("fish") – what beautiful color and light! Besides the daily diary of photos, there's a gallery too – check out this pic from the Heading to Dreamsville series – Kéa's artistry certainly shines through...  [hinah exhibitions < bright::light]

  • monthly task 5/10/05
Description: submitted 'views' on a monthly theme...
Comments: Though the site welcomes all types of images, it seems photographs are the entry of choice. The current monthly theme is solitude and submissions for next month's issue, color and colour, have to be submitted before May 30. Some outstanding photos (and links) here – I really like the simplicity of the presentation...  [zeroin]

  • pourcentage 5/9/05
Description: meeting place for different styles (Flash)
Comments: "72% of the netsurfers has already been infected by a virus." That's the theme of % numero 06, which contains a number of artists' submitted graphic interpretations, accepted "under the circumstances that each artist will attempt to solve the graphic problem with technical and convincing participation." The current and archived issues are full of big, tasty visuals, which certainly works for me...;~))

  • zeroin 5/8/05
Description: creative network about contemporary design
Comments: A "spot on the web" based in Athens and "inspired by other like-minded networks," the site defines itself as "a space where peoples ideas, work, visions and thoughts will be presented, exchanged, displayed and shared." Providing a bridge of sorts between the local and global design communities, today's pick houses dozens of interviews of designers and artists from around the world, each with accompanying examples of work plus detailed information on both local and world-wide events. Add hundreds of links in the searchable news archive – this is a nice mix, nicely done...;~))  [sjeiti]

  • Creative State 5/7/05
Description: a new online magazine showcasing creative work from around the world which otherwise might not have seen the light of day (Flash)
Comments: "What you'll see is a collection of art, music and writing which in some way defines why all these artists are in this field in the first place." Issue 1 offers an excellent assortment of things to see, read, and hear from over 2-dozen contributors and they're open to submissions for the next issue. Top-notch creatives within...;~))  [surfstation]

  • leogeo 5/6/05
    Description: experimental Flash art
Comments: "Best viewed with curiosity." From Barcelona, a journal of sorts meant to explore and express – several dozen experimental artworks using Flash. Be sure to click on the mirage and if you like it, you'll probably enjoy the glass toy too. I really like nocturno and sky lines and the info link helped shed some light on the motivation behind Leo's art and design space – I like it...;~))  [bright::light]

  • soy design 5/3/05
Description: paintings and illustrations by Toronto based artist Soy – cool robots and other images inspired by popular culture
Comments: "It is a dope beat. It is a quiet street. It is what it is." Though Soy has "moved away from painting graffiti" after graduating from the Integrated Media department at O.C.A.D., he still does some murals and stickers but focuses more on illustration and painting these days. I really like the Soyhead sticker and his drawing of a Graff Bug, but his Robots, all painted on canvas, are definitely the coolest...;~))

  • antipodean dot org 5/2/05
Description: "I'm a lover not a fighter. I like to take a photo."
Comments: Meet an interesting character originally from Australia but now "living and working in the United Kingdom." Recent weblog posts include music Tim likes, he and his wife Tricky's first baby (coming this fall), and info on an annual boat race on the Thames. I like the random images at the top – very tasty – and the photoblog even more – pics not only from the UK, but also from Germany, Austria, France, Spain, and Italy. "I like to take a photo." Thank you...;~))
