"Is this distraction or collaboration?" At first, Robert tried to "shut out" the "loud and filthy distractions" but was eventually "lured to the uniqueness and detail" they possess. Today's pick is an ongoing record of the trucks that appear outside Robert's window and the "things they give" presented in images and words. "Beautiful is not the fresh coat of paint but, the color of years hidden beneath." All very cool...
WallpaperContest 12/30/03 Description:
Take part in an ongoing call for some of the best computer wallpapers created...
Comments:
The contest is on and the current theme is Winter. Contestants have until 2/15/04 to submit their original wallpaper designs and will be competing for a useful prize worth over $40. If you design wallpapers, here's a "chance to show off your skills" and possibly win something too. And if you enjoy wallpapers, there's a handful already posted and I'm betting there will be a lot more showing up in January. They plan to have new contests every 2-3 months – see the site for details, guidelines, and tasty visuals...

watercolor, oils, and mix media art (Flash)
Comments:
There's 20 pieces of art in the "Galerias" from Spanish designer & illustrator Cafedenoche, which left me longing to see the larger originals. Mostly oils and watercolors done over the last few years, I think the works are superb. There's also 4 beautiful wallpapers (1024x768) available for download in .zip format. Nice, artsy design...

Updated every day. All analog, no hate.

There's an interesting article about Justin at Photoblogs.org, where his site is this month's Featured Photoblog. "People who like digital like instant gratification," says Justin who enjoys "the anticipation of getting the photos back." He feels that "process is important" in art and taking the digital route "doesn't reflect what photography can really do." He's right in terms of his own artistic objectives, but I'm not so sure digital photography is "clean and cold" compared to analog. In my mind, art is as much about the artist and his/her perspective as it is about the tools, and digital is just a different process with its own unique potential as to what photographers can really do. Just my opinion. I do understand and respect Justin's points about analog vs. digital though, especially after viewing his work. He's been taking pictures for a long time and he does it well. I like his site's simple navigation scheme, and more important, the wonderful photos...

a waste of time
Comments:
"One too many sleepless nights, one too many pixels rendered, one too many cigarettes smoked, what a waste of time." I'm pretty sure the "ex" in the name has something to do with experimental, and maybe "external" as well, where there's 5 Flash pieces I really like. "Chaotic growth" and "ticker" rock! There's more cool interactive art in "pattern" plus over 2-dozen static "print" works. Top it all off with some great photos like the "trainyard blues" series and it's clear that the "arte" has something to do with visual goodness... [Twofifty]

portfolio of the artist anita kreituse
Comments:
I may be just imagining it, but it seems the arrangement of thumbnails on the opening page form the number "23" and I wonder if that's significant. Anita Kreituse got her diploma from the Latvian Academy of Arts in 1980, which was 23 years ago. But she had graduated from art school 8 years before that and had started exhibiting her art the following year. So, whether the "23" means something or not, here's an artist who's been doing it for over 30 years – kudos for that! Besides her large showcase of paintings and drawings, I also found something interesting in the "profile" section – portraits of the artist, taken by various photographers, going back to the late 70s, including a picture from each of the last 6 months. The warm smile says it all...
Follow-up: Anita let me know that the "23" is for today's date and the arrangement changes daily to match the date. Pretty cool. I have to admit it never dawned on [silly] me... ;~))

I discovered Niark1's Old Skool graffiti style via upwardlink and have been back there 3 or 4 times this month. I love that stuff. This morning, I explored further and checked out his portfolio. Great illustrations, graphics, and other webwork in a well-designed space plus more cool roads worth following soon...

Comments:
Each image represents a day on the kalender but if you want to find a specific image by date, you're outta luck. The graphics are presented via a rotation script, which appears to be random, but you can set the reload time. I preferred the faster refresh rate myself. Just sit back and enjoy a tasty visual show, and even discover a little new cool in the process, like this site I just happened to find there back in February...

Alex submitted a smooth Flash piece for a previous Urban Collective issue, which certainly seems to live up to the theme of "poetry in motion." He just redesigned his site last month and though several sections aren't quite ready due to Alex being "swamped" with other things, the small selection of big, square photos and unique "news" interface tell me some more cool things are comin'...

cosmic, urban and funky music (Flash, RealAudio)
Comments:
"Savour the delicious brews by our wicked bunch." They call it the "realm of sexy, soulful, and sensual music" and promise new mixes weekly. Each of the 9 DJs has posted anywhere from 3 to 7 mixes, so there's plenty of digital audio broadcasts waiting for you. I listened to the cool, jazzy horns on Hazaak's "Mine is yours" mix this morning. I'm listening to one of Tintin's mixes right now. He's one of the site's owners whose "passion for music" started when he was 5. He's been a DJ since the 80s. It's a little hypnotic – maybe it's the bass – I like it. "Let me tell you about music" comes through the nulog player as I'm writing this. Yeah, baby. Tell me...

Comments:
I would hope that future generations, let's say in the year 2105, are able to visit places like the Redwood National Park and experience the majestic, centuries-old beauty of the great Sequoias. Today's pick, a project of GreenpeaceUSA, is a parody "inspired by the true story of the Bush administration's recent unraveling of environmental protections for our national forests." It drives the point home well, providing some surprising information...
We Are Not Sheep 12/11/03 Description:

Comments:
Though it's been said that bloggers "tend to post like sheep following the herd" (to which I weighed in with an affirmative baaaah), today's pick is out to say it ain't so. I doubt that Yvonne will be "one of those that would start a site and abandon it shortly thereafter" because I'm been reading since she started the blog (or at least this version) 3 short weeks ago and think it's looking good. I really like the post layout and the abbreviated archive pages. Like the rest of us, Yvonne's still fine tuning some things and her blogging style is evolving, but that's where her similarily to the flock ends, methinks...;~))

It would be easy to get the wrong idea when you first see the name of the site that peteski posted at Newstoday® a few days ago. In fact, there's no way I'm sharing what I pictured in my mind when I first saw the name, but it was funny, to say the least. Fortunately, the site was nothing like I imagined (;~P). Paul says cranes "have a strange sort of beauty" and has captured almost 200 photos of them over the last few years. I love it. That's just one of Paul Mison's projects – his personal site, which is today's pick, houses an enormous "photo index" plus a blog and other goodies. Clean, minimal design with excellent navigation and interesting content, from a webmonkey in London...

design broadcasting network – for a better tomorrow
Comments:
This one's long overdue. Over the last 2 years, I've reviewed 20 sites found there and it dawned on me over the weekend that I'd failed to add it to the listings. Today's pick provides a "people's voice platform, public broadcasting system." From what I can see, most of the registered members of the "Alliance Network" are designers, and it's easy to join. Besides the public broadcast, there's also a news column featuring posts by a "selected team of broadcasters" plus a public discussion area. The posts are frequent and on any day, you'll find a fresh supply of links to great design sites and other odd and amusing destinations. A truly great alternative portal, powered by people...

a journal of our blurring culture + everything reality television
Comments:
On one hand is "an online journal that publishes essays examining hyperreality." It relies on contributed essays "under the general topic of dissecting some part of our culture that is experiencing a blurring of its particular reality." On the other hand, for you reality tv enthusiasts out there, is a weblog providing "daily news from the TV whoredom." It's seems amazingly comprehensive (I say 'seems' because I'm not a big TV watcher myself). So, today's pick is actually two distinct sites in one. Excellent design and navigation and big points to both projects for concept and content. Nice work Andy... Popdex]

take the images in your head and push them out into a public space (Flash)
Comments:
With an outstanding Flash interface that reminds me a little of the now closed freshfroot, today's pick calls itself "an art gallery that you will create online." There's an actual offline gallery where submitted 2-D works will "stay on display until the gallery is full," but all works will be permanently archived in the "virtual gallery." Starting in January, artists will be able to upload images or short films (in specific formats). There's already a number of featured artists' works on display and I'm guessing come January, it's really going to take off. The "Hype Me" feature, which I'm not sure is ready-to-go yet, promises to send registered visitors a .pdf "Hype Mind Map" – a record of their "individual journey" through the site – how cool is that! Comments:
The site opens in a pop-up window and a second pop-up appears upon entering with a message apologizing for a lack of updates. Apology not necessary, thank you, because there's some really good visual content here. First, there's the "Zoo Scrapbook" with some knockout graphic designs. Then, there's 2 parts to the "Abstact Series" of photographs. One part focuses on signage and street art, while the other looks at what's overhead. Stuff like this keeps me sane too... Design Radar]

Stefan (known as "Steve" in a previous life) says "an image without a title is like a song without words." Profound! What I name a photo helps me understand what I saw and probably helps a viewer imagine what I imagined when I took the shot. As a not-so-young soul (and amateur photographer) who's also "trying to discover wisdom through experience," I think I'm going to start putting more thought into naming my photos, thanks to Stefans' perspective on the matter. Anyway, Stefans' site is a nice mix of writing and photography plus a personal journal. I'm still enjoying the thoughts provoked by "constant sensitivity" and "blemished permanence" and a photo titled "up is down, or is it?" "Mix the paints, discover new colors and combinations... interact with the world." Create... [photorealistica]
