  • design:project 4/29/00
Description: graphic & web design, art and photography
Comments: Today's pick is the "home planet" of a guy named Serge Danyshevsky - featuring super-stylish graphics throughout and a navigation scheme that makes total sense.  This showcase of art, photography, and design is unique and engaging and the assortment of quality content presented here is extensive.  I really enjoyed his photography section - a category called "expression" features a number of different "stories", each one a series portraying several emotions of a single subject through varied facial expressions.  Other categories found in the photography section include landscapes, still life, people and animals.  The other sections of the site are also impressive but I can only describe so much here - go check this site out and take your time - it's quite enjoyable!

  • Weblog Wannabe 4/26/00
Description: trying hard to be like yours
Comments: Today's winner comes from a 26 year old in Indonesia who is saying more about the web than she might even realize.  She tells us "I'll remain a wannabe because I don't really have what it takes to be a real one", referring to her wanting to be a web celebrity.  "I'm not cool enough to befriend any of the web hot shots (and get a link on their side bar)" - Yep! - she really says what a lot of people are thinking about.  Well, I got news for ya, Firda - forget the link on somebody's sidebar and just be yourself... we're all a bunch of wannabes, including the ones you call celebrities!  Your bright colored site and that cute little duck say there's a real honest person behind the site with a lot of personality who has a flair for design.  I've noticed lately that your entries are starting to become more about interesting sites out there instead of the typical dribble about who links to you, etc., though you're still doing a little too much of that to be like the others.  While you sit there saying you're a wannabe, others are looking at your site and saying I wannabe like Firda...count on it!

Description: Flash animation, story board and character design - including the animation and visual art gallery and links collection. If you are involved in animation, new media or any aspect of visual design, hope you will find something of interest here.
Comments: The producer of today's winner say his site "has cultivated his ability to express a wide range of emotions in the characters he animates while supressing his inner demons."  His characters, with names like "Ca Ga" and "Da Ba", are little aliens with monitors for faces and I've got to say, they're actually pretty cute little guys.  He's also got story boards on display for a work called "Subway Killer" that further demonstrate his special talents in art/illustration.  Man, I wish I could do what this guy does so well!  The Flash animation on the splash screen is what really got my attention - a dog-like like machine or a machine-like dog? - you decide.  His "about" popup also has some cool window and scrolling controls that I haven't really seen anyone else use - he's definitely an innovator!

Description: world wide web stimulus: the best designed sites collected rated and cross-referenced, for creatives, developers, marketers and enthusiasts
Comments: "It can be difficult to know where to look to see the best sites out there."  I agree.  Today's winning site presents an excellent collection of "the best designed sites" - many listings include high-quality screenshots and the producer's judgment as to what "best designed" means is right on the money!  The neatly organized database currently includes over 1000 sites and includes a user rating system and a wonderful interface for finding exactly what you're after, whether you prefer to browse or search.  An inspirational portal in its "live beta test phase", this site, in a word, is sweet.  Go for it!

  • Robby Woodard 4/15/00
Description: Freelance illustration and graphic design with a humorous bent.
Comments: It's getting harder and harder to find cool sites that are not commercial in some way.  The freelancer behind today's winning site, for example, would love to hear from you about his services, but he doesn't resort to sales pitches and hype.  He simply shows you the samples and it's your choice whether you want to simply enjoy the show for art's sake or contact him if you're so inclined.  I guess I have to respect anyone who showcases their creative talents without making you feel like there's a saleman breathing down your neck making all kind of claims about what they can do for you.  Robby Woodard is an exceptional illustrator and designer and that clearly shows in his website.  The navigation and color schemes are excellent.  In addition to illustration, you'll also find sections on logo design, web design and typography.

  • juked 4/13/00
Description: We only hope to leave you, the reader, with something to mull over in your mind, something to chew on as you click "shut down" and get ready to move on to the real world.
Comments: The crew of this online literary magazine (who call themselves slaves) appear to be committed to free thought and expression and they certainly aren't in it for the money.  This is probably best stated by one of the contributors, Geoff M. Hathaway, who tells us "I used to be an unrecognized, starving writer who wrote only for his dog before I happened upon Juked. Now I'm still unrecognized and starving, but at least I write for 10 other people-and on a good day, 15!"   They love what they do and the site design is pretty cool, though it could be a little more fluid without losing the flavor.  Anyway, this site has plenty of interesting reading for the surfer with an attention span and, as today's winner of the Best of the Cool, they can now count on 16 on a good day.  They're also looking for new slaves...

  • Wench 4/12/00
Description: ...feminism, issues, politics and culture
Comments: Calling itself a "guide to the choices of the next millennium", this online magazine for women is full of interesting and insightful content written for men and women alike.  The featured articles and essays cover a wide range of topics including women in the military, the road back from self-injury, lifestyles portrayed in television, women in politics, and Jerry Falwell.  I was really impressed with "Darkness and Dreams" which features some intriguing photography from a lady named Serena Wellen.  All in all, this well designed site gives the reader plenty of good content which is thought provoking and relevant - well done!

  • artmonster.com 4/4/00
Description: extensive gallery of multimedia artist Michael P. Thompson
Comments: Hi all, Kitty here, and I have the grand honor of presenting today's Best of the Cool winner.  "Artist" doesn't begin to describe the producer of this site.  This guy's created artwork using everything from acrylics to pastels to an ink pen and a highlighter.  The gallery is neatly organized by medium and very easy to navigate, and each grouping is presented with fast loading thumbnails.  Throw in a few coolio java applets in a "miscellaneous" category, and you have a wonderfully executed art gallery to browse.  Ya gotta love the web! We have the ability to visit wonderful works of art without taking one step beyond the confines of our homes.  We also have the opportunity to contribute works of art for others to enjoy... hey! speaking of which, wanna come over and play with me? hmm? c'mon, you know you want to... c'ya there then, k? xoxo
